Tips for Buying Your Wedding Dress Online

Tips for Buying Your Wedding Dress Online

While it is a great feeling to go to a bridal gown store with your mom and your bridesmaids in order to look for your wedding dress, COVID has certainly changed things. In many states, you aren’t even allowed to try on dresses in the store. There’s also great ease, comfort (and even great savings!) when you buy your wedding dress from an online boutique.

We know that you are feeling nervous about your online purchase. Here are a few expert tips to help you shop for your dream dress online.

TIP #1: KNOW YOUR MEASUREMENTS.

You will need three measurements: bust, waist, hips.

When taking these measurements, use a cloth tape measure. Make sure that, when you circle your chest, waist, or hips, the tape is level and neither too tight nor too loose. Also measure yourself on your bare skin, not over clothes. And this may sound silly, but don’t trust your memory — be sure to write the measurements down! You can even as a professional to take them for you if you aren’t sure!

TIP #2: GET FAMILIAR WITH WEDDING GOWN FABRICS

When you are in a store, you have the luxury of running your fingers over the fabrics. It’s important to know how certain material will fold and feel on your body so be certain to do your homework! Ask around! Do research online and consider going to a fabric store to see how certain ones feel. You will really want to feel comfortable on your wedding day.

TIP #3: KNOW THE STORE’S POLICIES

Would you still buy a dress if the shipping cost is high? (This is an industry standard for wedding gowns; companies like to insure their shipments.) Would you take the risk if you couldn’t return it? You won’t want to purchase a fabulous gown only for it to arrive and not meet your expectations.

TIP #4: READ PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS THOROUGHLY AND ASK QUESTIONS

Though most bridal gown descriptions online are pretty thorough and technical, good dress descriptions will help you understand more about the fabrics that are being used, how the dress is lined, where it’s manufactured and how it fits. Some stores have videos of models wearing their dresses, and this can be really useful.

TIP #5: DO YOUR HOMEWORK

A highly desired gown at a great price is a hot commodity. Since the industry trends change, it’s always good to make sure you know what you want and how much you are willing to pay for it. Once you see a gown you love, ask the right questions, pay attention to the descriptions and the store policies….if the price is right, go for it!
